NB notice re trail routes for runners and cyclists

We have received numerous complaints from farmers re runners on their farms.  Kindly note that Wannabee club trail running members may only run on the two designated trail running routes at Somerbosch. Please help us spread the word and keep runners off the property where the landowners have not provided us with permission to run on their farms.

For safety reasons, runners must stick to the designated trail running routes.  No cycling is allowed on the running trails and no running allowed on the cycling trails.

We noticed the demand for running trails and will do our best to provide more running routes next year.

Cyclists, please note that due to farm activities, some of our cycling trails had to be closed and or changed.  Please keep to the designated routes and do not cycle on closed routes or remove the candy tape that closes sections off.

Notice from our MTB committee: Riders need to stick to the road in and out of the trails at Raithby, please … the section around the new vineyard section is very muddy and with pipes recently being laid, the ground is extremely soft… thus the trail section is closed till further notice and the road is to be used to access the trail in and out past the labourer cottages.

Theunis – he always took the long way home.

Theunis Esterhuizen, one of our longstanding members, sadly passed away on Saturday whilst riding with his buddies. The group stopped at 96 Winery Road for coffee when Theunis collapsed. We would like to thank the staff for the efficient manner in which this tragedy was managed. A special thanks to Louw, a first responder, who continued with CPR until the ambulance arrived.

We would like to suggest that club members do their ride this coming Saturday, 25 July, in memory and honour of Theunis. The club has arranged with 96 Winery Road to offer coffee and muffins to members between 10 and 11 am. We will salute Theunis at around 10:30. The club will foot the bill for the refreshments.

Not only will we celebrate Theunis’ love for cycling and life, but we will use this opportunity to open up the new trail section to accommodate the new pit stop for members at 96 Winery Road. We will post the route on our website by Friday afternoon.

Members should complete this online booking form by Thursday afternoon in order for us to prepare the catering.

MTB trails – gates and exciting new trails

With the winter storms the last 2 weeks, there is a lot of erosion and damage to the trails. Errol with his team has been hard at work to do repairs and maintenance. Some areas that are very muddy have been rerouted.

Any feedback on issues will be appreciated. You can send a WhatsApp to the club cell phone.

We have upgraded and added some new trail sections at Dornier.

New bridges and berms added to the existing trail sections to make the ride more enjoyable.

Then we added a new single track with some nice futures at the top of the farm after you have passed the viewpoint at the pine trees. The single track curls down the side of the mountain through the proteas and fynbos to join up later with the existing single track at the bottom.

Those who have been riding on Stellenzicht in the last month would have noticed that they have installed a new security fence around the bottom of the farm. As of Friday 3 July, you will not be able to use the entrance from the newly tarred Stellenrust road. You will only be able to enter through the new Stellenzight main gate on the Dornier side. This gate will be open during the week from 6 am to 6 pm. On weekends it will be locked. Next to the main gate, there is a pedestrian gate that can be used by our club members to enter and exit. There is an electronic lock that can open the gate with a code. This code will be changed monthly, and we will send it out to the club members on the WhatsApp communications. Please make sure the gate is closed once you have passed through it.

This code is not to be shared with any non-members. Please respect the farm and their security, it is a privilege that we can ride there and we don’t want to compromise that.
